Step inside the Greek-Australian café of a golden era - the smell of frying chips and freshly ground coffee, the clatter of plates - the heart of the town.
This was the world that fed regional Australia for the better part of a century. The Greek cafés. The milk bars. The families behind the counter who arrived with photographs of strangers in their pockets and built lives one malted milkshake at a time.
Greco Retro Jazz band Girl From Greece bring you Our Big Fat Greek Café Tour - a 75-minute live music show woven with the soundtrack of those cafés - Greek classics, jazz standards, timeless favourites - and the stories that filled their walls.
Katerini’s mum Kos nee Feros family grew up in Byron Bay, where she worked behind the counter at her family's Feros and Feros milkbar and bottle shop, established 1923. Mel’s family ran the Cafe Royal and Elite cafe in Bundaberg around the same time. Now Katerini comes to Byron Bay with Mel by her side, bringing the whole Greek café story to the stage with a stellar six-piece band of Australia's finest musicians, with bouzouki at the heart of it all.
Greek classics. Jazz standards. Stories from behind the counter that belong to everyone who walked through the door. The yelling and the laughing. The early mornings and the late nights. The daily opera of café life.
Part concert, part shared history, all heart.
Fresh from a sold-out launch at Brisbane's Thomas Dixon Centre, which was a feature performance at the 50th anniversary of Paniyiri Greek Festival.
