Self-Defence Classes, Byron Bay Rotary and Garden Growth

11 - 14 November 2025

This week at Fletcher Street Cottage we’ve been empowering women, connecting with our community and strengthening our knowledge to better support those in need. Here’s a snapshot of what’s been happening.

Highlights

  • On Tuesday evening, we joined the Byron Bay Rotary Club to share updates on the work we do at Fletcher Street Cottage, particularly in supporting vulnerable women and children. It was a wonderful opportunity to connect with our local community and express our gratitude for their continued support.
  • We are now in week two of our four-week Empowerment and Self-Defence Course, led by our trained facilitator Rachael. This program has been designed for women attending Women’s Space, building strength, safety and confidence in a supportive environment. A big thank you to Zonta Northern Rivers for sponsoring this important initiative.
  • Our Women’s Flower and Herb Garden, also sponsored by Zonta Northern Rivers, is flourishing beautifully in the warm, rainy weather. The garden has become a nurturing space for connection and calm.
  • On Thursday afternoon, our team meeting included an information session about the Victims Support Scheme from the Department of Communities and Justice. The scheme provides counselling and financial support for individuals and families who have been victims of serious crime. Learning more about this program helps us strengthen our advocacy and ensure people are connected to the right services.
  • This week, we supported over 260 people, providing a range of assistance including financial support, housing referrals and access to mental health services.
