NRCF: Community Giving in Action

A Celebration of Generosity and Local Leadership at the NRCF Giving Event

NRCF: Community Giving in Action

On 20 November 2025, Maddi and Steve from Fletcher Street Cottage attended the Northern Rivers Community Foundation’s annual Community Giving celebration at Elements of Byron - an inspiring event recognising the people and projects strengthening connection, resilience and wellbeing across our region.

The event brought together donors, community organisations and local changemakers to celebrate the collective impact of more than $400,000 in funding, supporting 33 grassroots projects across the Northern Rivers.

For Fletcher Street Cottage and the Byron Community Centre, the event was an opportunity to acknowledge the two NRCF-funded initiatives that are helping us continue our work with those experiencing hardship in Byron Shire.

Women’s Health Access Program – Fletcher Street Cottage

Thanks to NRCF’s support, we are launching a trauma-informed, women-only health access program at Fletcher Street Cottage.

The weekly clinic will provide:

  • free onsite nursing care
  • GP Telehealth support
  • preventative health screenings
  • health system navigation
  • wraparound support in a safe, trusted, women-only environment

This program is designed specifically for women experiencing or at risk of homelessness - a group often facing significant barriers to accessing medical care. Being able to co-locate this service within Fletcher Street Cottage means women can receive support where they already feel safe and welcome.

Kitchen Upgrade: Commercial Stove & Exhaust

NRCF has also funded the final stage of a major upgrade to our kitchen at Fletcher Street Cottage.

With demand for meals on the rise, this infrastructure investment - a compliant commercial stove, exhaust canopy and flue - allows us to safely cook larger batches and continue providing nutritious meals for people doing it tough in Byron Shire.

This upgrade builds on recent refurbishments, including electrical improvements, commercial refrigeration, new equipment and café furniture, helping us create a safer, more functional and welcoming space for all.

A Celebration of Generosity and Local Leadership

NRCF CEO Sam Henderson described this year’s program as a reflection of both the level of need in the region and the strength of local organisations delivering place-based impact where it matters most:

“It’s the generosity of our donors and partners that makes this work possible… it’s a privilege to help channel that support directly into the hands of the people creating lasting change across the Northern Rivers.”

The event also highlighted the launch of NRCF’s two new philanthropic funds - the Arts & Culture Fund and the Climate Action Fund - ensuring even more targeted, locally led support for the years ahead.

Thank You

We’re incredibly grateful to NRCF, its donors and partners, and to everyone working behind the scenes to build stronger, more connected and more resilient communities across the Northern Rivers.

These grants enable Fletcher Street Cottage to continue meeting rising need and offering practical, compassionate support for people experiencing hardship in Byron Shire.

Thank you for believing in this work - and in the power of community.
