New Social Work Student, Community Partnerships and Radio Debut

From the Cottage: New Partnerships, Community Support and Radio Debut

29th July – 1st August 2025

This week at Fletcher Street Cottage, we’ve been busy welcoming new team members, collaborating with service providers and continuing to support the community. Here’s a look at what’s been happening.

Highlights:

  • We’re excited to welcome Laura, our new Social Work student, who will be joining us until December. This partnership with the University Centre for Rural Health (UCRH) and the University of Sydney allows us to provide valuable learning experiences while further strengthening our service to the community.
  • We had a range of services visiting Fletcher Street Cottage this week, including a solicitor from the Northern Rivers Legal Service, the Mental Health Team from the Homelessness Health Outreach Team, Community Corrections, Epic Assist Employment Services and Dr Kelly from First Light Health Care. We also had a pop-in visit from Anna and Sarah from 1000 Voices and the Backbone Team at the Byron Shire Council. It’s always a pleasure to collaborate with these dedicated organisations to ensure our clients receive the support they need.
  • This week, we provided support to over 240 people, with more than 50 of them being women. We’re proud to continue offering essential services to those in need.
  • We were pleased to assist a local man who has lived in the Byron Shire for over 30 years. He had an unexpected bill that made it difficult to cover his rent, bills, food and fuel. We provided a fuel voucher to help him get to a medical appointment, ensuring he could access the care he needed. This was just one of over 20 one-on-one appointments our Community Support Workers had this week. These appointments allow us to address the specific needs of individuals and connect them to the right resources. We are grateful to our community for the support that enables us to continue offering this vital assistance.
  • On Friday, Damian, our Manager, hosted his first radio show on BayFM. You can tune in each first Friday of the month from 9am – 10am to hear more about the work we do at Fletcher Street Cottage and the issues facing our community.
