New Health Initiative, Volunteer Support and Housing Success

This week at Fletcher Street Cottage, we’ve been focused on health partnerships, continued support for our community and some exciting news for our clients. Here’s a look at what’s been happening.
Highlights:
- We celebrated the launch of a new health initiative by Healthy North Coast, supported by $540,000 in federal funding. This initiative will bring essential healthcare to people experiencing homelessness across Byron Bay, Mullumbimby, Tweed Heads and Coffs Harbour. We’re proud to be a part of this important program, which embeds GPs and nurses in trusted community spaces like Fletcher Street Cottage. The program has already had a profound impact, with one service user sharing, “When I first came to Fletcher Street Cottage, I felt extremely unwell and out of control of my health. Now, through regular consultations with the GP, my health has stabilised, and I can access the medication I need. The deep level of care at Fletcher Street Cottage and from the doctors here has greatly improved my mental health. I no longer feel so isolated and alone.”
- Steve, our incredible Breakfast Coordinator, has been busy cooking up a storm for our service users. This week, Steve and our dedicated team of volunteers prepared over 200 breakfasts for those sleeping rough. A huge thank you to Steve and everyone who helps ensure our clients start their day with a warm meal.
- On Thursday, we met with the Brunz Breaky volunteer team, who cook up breakfast each Wednesday and Friday. It’s always a pleasure to meet with others doing the same heartwarming work. A big thank you to these volunteers who have been serving the community for decades - your dedication makes a huge difference.
- This week, we were thrilled to see one of our clients housed after an incredibly long wait on the housing list. This is such a significant achievement for them, and we couldn’t be happier to see them take this big step toward stability. Congratulations!
