Lin's Story: Market Stallholder since 1989

The Byron Community Market has always been more than a place to shop. Since 1987, it has been a gathering ground for creativity, culture and community connection. To celebrate this unique spirit, we’re sharing the journey of Lin, who first joined the markets in 1989 and has been part of its evolving story ever since.

Lin remembers those early days with fondness.

“I sold out in the same day and returned to Bali to get more, sold out again. Did this a few times and the idea birthed into an amazing shop… it was called Shoomba Clothing & Tribal Art in Carlyle Street, Byron. We had a big Balinese bed as a counter, a tipi as a changeroom, no plastic and four of us beautiful barefooted women.”

Like the markets themselves, Lin's stall evolved over time. From colourful rayon knit clothing to her Inner Self Guidance cards and readings, she has always brought creativity to the community.

“The Byron Community Market has always felt like part of me, I’ve loved connecting with others, both fellow stallholders and visitors, and there’s such joy in seeing people light up when they find something they love.”

For Lin, the 1980s markets were defined by colour, music and freedom.

“Stalls were funky. There weren’t pop-up gazebos in the beginning. Many stalls had bamboo poles with tarps or covers, giving each one its own unique charm. And of course, the drumming circle, it was brilliant. Dancing, colourful, gypsy-like. And the Chai Tent where people used to hang out. Fun, a sense of community and belonging, a tribal vibe, colour, creativity, character.”

Byron Community Market Coordinator, Natwah Petruszka, says stallholders like Lin are at the heart of why the markets continue to thrive.

“The Byron Community Market is about people, stories and community. Lin represents the creativity and connection that have kept the markets alive for decades. As we celebrate our history at the 'Born in the 80s' special event on 5 October, we also celebrate those who helped shape it.”

For Lin, being part of the markets has always been about more than making a living.

“I love the idea, it’s a wonderful way to celebrate the markets’ rich culture. I feel acknowledged on behalf of us ‘oldies’. It’s a reminder of the spirit of Byron.”

Her advice to today’s stallholders carries the same energy that made the 80s markets so special.

“Let your unique creativity shine while working within today’s guidelines. When you truly love what you do, that passion naturally draws people in. Sprinkle a little of your own magic into the markets, giving visitors a reason to stop, smile and be inspired.”

The Byron Community Market continues to be a place of creativity and connection, just as it was when Lin first set up her stall in 1989. Her journey is a reminder that while times change, the spirit of the market remains the same: vibrant, welcoming and full of heart.

Join us as we honour this legacy at the 'Born in the 80s' Byron Community Market special event, happening on Sunday 5 October from 8am to 3pm at Main Beach, Byron Bay.
