The Byron Community Centre is proud to announce the one-year anniversary of Fletcher Street Cottage, a homeless hub that provides a safe and secure environment for those in need.
Since opening its doors on April 12th 2022, Fletcher Street Cottage has had over 7,000 visits to the service from people experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless. The cottage offers a range of services, including breakfast, shower and laundry facilities, and access to medical and housing services.
“The team at Fletcher Street Cottage work tirelessly to improve the daily lot of our most vulnerable,” says Lindy Swain, Fletcher Street Cottage Manager. “Providing support in system navigation, sourcing important documentation, emergency relief and connecting to other community organisations are just some of the services we provide. Most importantly we offer compassion and a listening ear.”
Vital Resource for Those in Need
"We are thrilled to celebrate this milestone and are grateful for the support we have received from the community," says Louise O'Connell, General Manager of the Byron Community Centre. "Fletcher Street Cottage has become a vital resource for those in need, and we are proud to be able to provide a safe and welcoming space for people to access support and services."
The success of Fletcher Street Cottage is a testament to the hard work and dedication of the staff and volunteers who work tirelessly to support those experiencing housing insecurity. The cottage currently has no ongoing government funding, and has been able to operate thanks to the generous support of community members and local businesses.
"We would like to extend our deepest gratitude to all those who have supported us over the past year," says Louise. "Your contributions have made a tremendous impact in the lives of those we serve, and we could not have achieved this milestone without your help."
Support Needed for the Future
As the Byron Community Centre looks ahead to the future, they remain committed to their mission of providing support and services to those in need. They hope to continue to grow and expand their offerings, ensuring that everyone in the region has access to the resources they need to thrive.
Fletcher Street Cottage is inviting their visiting services, including Social Futures, Homeless Health Outreach Team and First Light Healthcare, and neighbouring businesses to a 1st Birthday Breakfast on April 12.
