Local artist Mirabela Varga brings a deeply personal and textural body of work to Byron Spaces Gallery, inviting visitors to slow down and reconnect.
In a world that rarely slows down, Coherence offers a quiet invitation to pause.
Now showing at Byron Spaces Gallery within the Byron Community Centre, this new exhibition by Northern Rivers artist Mirabela Varga explores the space between emotion and expression, where stillness, texture and colour come together to create something deeply felt.
For Mirabela, painting has never been just about the finished piece. It is a process shaped by experience, reflection and connection.
“My journey as an artist has been one of devotion, persistence, and deep personal growth. Art has always been more than a career for me, it has been a way to process emotions, express truth, and create meaningful connections with people through colour and texture.”
That sense of connection sits at the heart of Coherence, a body of work that reflects years of intuitive practice and emotional honesty.
“Coherence feels like a natural continuation of this journey. It represents alignment between the inner world and outer expression, between feeling and form, and between the artist and the viewer.”
Working in a contemporary impressionist style, Mirabela’s pieces are defined by texture, movement and atmosphere. Using a palette knife as her primary tool, she creates bold, layered surfaces that feel immediate and alive.
“The palette knife is central to my artistic identity,” she explains. “It allows me to create bold textures and expressive movement that feel alive and immediate.”
Her work draws heavily on the environment around her. Living in the Northern Rivers has shaped not only what she paints, but how she paints.
“The natural beauty, the ocean, the light, and the slower pace of life all contribute to the calm and openness that I try to capture in my paintings,” she says.
That connection to place extends into the community. As a regular artist at the Byron Markets, Mirabela has built relationships with locals and visitors alike, sharing her work in a setting that is grounded in conversation and human connection.
“It has allowed me to meet people directly, share my work face-to-face, and build genuine relationships,” she says. “It reminds me that art is ultimately about human connection and shared experience.”
In Coherence, those ideas take on a quieter, more introspective form. The exhibition explores themes of emotional alignment, inner calm and resilience, inviting visitors to slow down and reconnect.
“The works focus on creating a sense of stillness and balance, inviting viewers to slow down and reconnect with themselves through colour, texture, and atmosphere,”
Some pieces carry a deeper personal meaning, shaped by moments of growth and reflection.
“These pieces hold a quiet emotional weight and are created from a place of authenticity and introspection,” she says.
Set within Byron Spaces Gallery, the exhibition reflects the creative and community driven spirit of the region, offering an accessible space for both artists and audiences to connect.
“Byron Spaces Gallery feels like the right place for Coherence because it aligns with the creative and community-driven spirit of the Northern Rivers,” she says.
For Mirabela, the intention behind the exhibition is simple.
“I hope visitors walk away feeling something real, whether that is calm, inspiration, reflection, or emotional connection,” she says. “If someone leaves feeling more grounded, uplifted, or quietly moved, then the exhibition has done what it was meant to do.”
Byron Spaces Gallery is open weekdays from 10am to 4pm, with visitors welcome to drop in and experience Coherence at their own pace.
