Beating to the Rhythm of Connection: ACCF Supports Byron Seniors Club
In January 2025, Byron Community Centre received a $5,000 grant from the Australian Chinese Charity Foundation (ACCF) to support the Byron Seniors Club's Elder Beats: Rhythm and Dance program.
Elder Beats offers regular group djembe drumming and dance sessions at Byron Theatre, followed by a friendly social tea to foster connection and community spirit. The program encourages physical activity, mental wellbeing, cognitive stimulation and emotional expression, creating a joyful space for seniors across Byron Shire.
Seniors Program Coordinator, Shanti des Fours, said:
“Elder Beats is more than just music and movement - it's a place where seniors can connect, share laughter and feel part of something uplifting. Thanks to ACCF's support, we can continue to offer this vibrant program to our community.”
Program presenter Gareth Jones from Sound Synergy shared:
"Sound Synergy is delighted to be a part of the Byron Seniors Club program. The sessions are designed to bring the community together, providing an outlet for fun, creative expression through the magic of African drumming and rhythm. Drumming promotes a healthy mind and body, as well as improved listening and concentration skills, in a fun, relaxed environment. The vibrant energy that is created from drumming together is projected amongst the group and we all feed off that, sharing the joy as a giant percussion orchestra.”
Sessions are free and inclusive, welcoming seniors of all abilities to participate in a safe, supportive environment. With funding from ACCF, we are able to cover facilitator fees, afternoon teas and program delivery costs, ensuring Elder Beats remains accessible to everyone who wishes to join.
Byron Community Centre warmly thanks ACCF for their generous support in helping us reduce social isolation and enrich the lives of our senior community members.
