A place to feel safe, seen and supported: Inside the Women’s Clinic at Fletcher Street Cottage
At Fletcher Street Cottage, something quietly powerful is happening each week.
In a private, women-only space, a nurse sits alongside support workers, ready to listen. There's no rush, no judgement, no barriers. Just care, connection and the chance to take a small but important step forward.
This is the Women’s Clinic - a free, drop-in health service designed for women who might otherwise go without medical care. And already, it’s making a difference.
Meeting women where they are
For many women experiencing homelessness, domestic violence or hardship, accessing healthcare isn’t simple. It can feel overwhelming, unsafe or simply out of reach.
That’s why the clinic is embedded within Fletcher Street Cottage’s Women’s Space - a familiar, trusted environment where women are already coming for support.
Here, healthcare happens differently.
It’s trauma-informed, meaning women are met with understanding and compassion. It’s low-barrier, meaning no appointments, no cost and no complicated systems to navigate. And it’s integrated, meaning support doesn’t stop at one issue - it looks at the whole person.
As one woman shared after her visit:
“Being in here with you is the first time I’ve felt calm all day.”
Small steps that lead to big change
In just the first 10 weeks of operation, the clinic has already supported 87 engagements, including 15 clinical consultations and a wide range of health support.
But behind those numbers are real moments of care:
- A wound cleaned and treated before it becomes something more serious
- A conversation about mental health that opens the door to support
- Help understanding medication or navigating the health system
- A referral that connects someone to ongoing care for the first time
These are early steps - but they matter.
For many women, the clinic is the first time they’ve engaged with healthcare in a long time. It’s a starting point for rebuilding trust, improving health literacy and feeling more in control of their wellbeing.
A connection point
What makes the Women’s Clinic unique is how it works alongside everything else happening at Fletcher Street Cottage.
A woman might come in for a meal or a shower, and while she’s there, connect with a nurse. In one visit, she can access healthcare, emotional support and referrals to other services - all in the same place.
This wraparound approach means nothing falls through the cracks.
It also means the focus isn’t just on immediate health concerns, but on long-term wellbeing - from mental health and alcohol and other drug support, to family services and ongoing medical care.
Building trust, one conversation at a time
One of the most important outcomes so far isn’t something you can easily measure.
It’s trust.
The team has seen that many interactions begin simply with conversation - listening, building rapport, creating a sense of safety. Clinical care often follows later, once that trust is established.
And that trust is already shining through in feedback:
“I feel safe with you.”
“Thank you, this makes life easier for me.”
“Grateful for you here today.”
For women who have experienced trauma or exclusion from mainstream services, feeling safe is everything. It’s the foundation that makes all other care possible.
A pathway forward
The Women’s Clinic is still in its early stages, but the impact is clear.
Women are engaging. They are asking questions. They are taking steps toward better health.
In one example, a woman who had never accessed sexual health services before was supported to understand the process, feel reassured and book a follow-up appointment - something that may not have happened without this safe, supportive environment.
This is what the clinic is all about: removing barriers, creating connection and helping women move forward at their own pace.
Why it matters
At its heart, the Women’s Clinic is about equity.
It recognises that not everyone has the same access to healthcare - and it actively works to change that by meeting women where they are, in a space where they feel safe, respected and supported.
Because when women have access to medical care, information and support, everything changes.
Health improves. Confidence grows. And the path forward becomes a little clearer.
