Housing Breakthrough, 266 Breakfasts and Trivia Fun

6th - 9th October 2026

This week at Fletcher Street Cottage we celebrated a positive housing outcome, served hundreds of nutritious breakfasts and strengthened our team's skills, with a little friendly competition along the way. Here's a snapshot of what happened.

Highlights

  • This week, our Community Support Workers helped a woman update her residential address to NSW, opening up access to essential services and housing support. The very next day, she secured temporary accommodation through Link2home, the NSW homelessness information and referral service. This important step gives her greater stability and an opportunity to work towards a long-term housing solution. It's a wonderful example of how practical assistance with everyday administrative barriers can lead to life-changing outcomes.
  • Steve and our incredible breakfast team served 266 free breakfasts between Tuesday and Friday. Every meal provides more than just nourishment. It's an opportunity for people experiencing hardship to connect with others, access support and start their day in a welcoming environment. A huge thank you to our dedicated volunteers, donors and breakfast team who make this possible.
  • Fletcher Street Cottage staff and student placements participated in a de-escalation workshop delivered by Byron Community College. The training focused on managing challenging situations through respectful communication, clear boundaries and practical de-escalation strategies. These skills are essential in supporting the safety and wellbeing of participants, volunteers and staff, helping ensure Fletcher Street Cottage remains a welcoming space where people can relax, enjoy breakfast, access showers and laundry and connect with essential services.
  • Our fortnightly Friday Trivia brought plenty of laughter and friendly competition, ending in an exciting three-way tie! The deciding question asked which artist sampled ABBA's 1979 hit Gimme! Gimme! Gimme! (A Man After Midnight) in their 2005 song Hung Up. The winning participant received a bag of snakes, which they generously shared with everyone. Previous prizes have included donated head torches and delicious coffee cakes. A big thank you to our wonderful volunteer trivia host for bringing fun, connection and a little healthy competition to the Cottage!
