On May 10 2024, Fletcher Street Cottage hosted a heartwarming Donor Event that marked two significant milestones: the cottage's 2nd Anniversary and an exclusive thank you to our valued donors, partners and sponsors, who play a huge role in enabling the cottage’s services to continue running.
The evening was a testament to the power of community support and the impact of collective generosity. Organised to celebrate the anniversary and deepen the bond between our donors and the cause they so generously support, the event was largely made possible by donations and sponsorship from local businesses and saw 75 enthusiastic donors fill the space to capacity.
"Our donors are the lifeblood of Fletcher Street Cottage,” says Kate Love, Communications Manager at Byron Community Centre and event organiser. “This event was our way of showing them just how much their support means to us and the community we serve.”
ABC’s Angela Catterns served as our MC for the evening, and we were honoured to host keynote speaker Dr Gregory Smith, both of whom generously donated their time to engage and inspire our guests. Dr Smith inspired everyone with his heartfelt and insightful talk on his personal journey from homelessness to academia, and the way that acts of kindness made a difference in turning his life around.
Speeches were also given by Louise O’Connell, General Manager of the Byron Community Centre, who touched on the importance of financial support and Jen Lunan, Manager of Fletcher Street Cottage on daily operations. Three of the staff then touched everyone’s hearts by reading first-person stories from our service users about how Fletcher Street Cottage has changed their lives.
The event was set against the backdrop of music by local musician Joe Conroy, and guests were treated to a delightful menu by our Breakfast team crafted from donated produce, including starters like crute with garlic bean purée, mini mushroom tarts and golden zucchini fritters.
The main course was based on what we serve our service users every week for Burger Friday to give donors a taste of what is served at Fletcher Street Cottage. It featured classic beef burgers, marinated chicken burgers and roasted sweet potato with spiced black bean burgers. To finish, chocolate and hazelnut brownies were served, accompanied by refreshing Good Happy Kombucha.
Bangalow Bread Co. (bread), Devine Quality Meats (meat), Bayleaf (cutlery), Suncoast Fresh (produce), Good Happy (kombucha) and Haven Botanical (floral arrangements) generously supplied the event's food, drinks and decor. KMart Ballina provided decor, while Bunnings Byron Bay contributed lighting and heating. Mullumbimby Printworks (printing) and Brendan McMullan Photography generously provided services.
"The generosity of local businesses in supplying the food, drinks and decor made the evening truly special,” says Steve Strang, Fletcher Street Cottage Breakfast Coordinator. "Their contributions allowed us to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere for our donors.”
A dedicated team of 16 volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure the event's success. From catering and kitchen volunteers to event volunteers, their efforts were invaluable. The event featured an info desk adorned with Fletcher Street Cottage collateral, posters, pull-up banners and cards, all highlighting the incredible impact of donor contributions. Personalised thank you messages from service users added a touch of heartfelt gratitude, making it evident how deeply appreciated each donation is.
"We wouldn't be able to hold these important events without the support of our volunteers and partners," said Will Conley, Daily Coordinator at Fletcher Street Cottage. "We are always overwhelmed by the incredible support we receive from our dedicated volunteers."
The event not only celebrated our donors but also aimed to secure future donations and partnerships. By fostering a connection and showcasing the tangible impact of their support, we hope to continue strengthening our relationships with existing supporters and welcome new ones.
Thank you to everyone who made this event possible and to all our donors for their continued support. Together, we are making a difference.
