Help Us Reach 1000 Voices and Shape Action on Homelessness

The 1000 Voices Byron Shire project has officially launched, and we’re calling on locals to step up as Community Researchers to help gather community feedback on homelessness and housing challenges in our region.

Led by the Ending Rough Sleeping Collaboration Byron Shire, and co-funded by Byron Shire Council and a philanthropic foundation, this project invites people from all walks of life to share their thoughts, experiences and ideas - with the goal of shaping community-led action.

“We believe the answers to solving homelessness live within our community,” says Anna Lockwood, Backbone Lead of the Collaboration. “1000 Voices is about hearing from everyone – especially those whose voices are too often left out – and making sure they shape the solutions.”
“At Fletcher Street Cottage, we see the impact of homelessness every day. That’s why the 1000 Voices project is so important – it gives our whole community a chance to speak up, be heard and help drive meaningful change,” says Damian Farrell, Manager of Fletcher Street Cottage.

Community Researchers will receive full training, resources and ongoing guidance. The role is voluntary and involves having conversations, listening with care and helping people complete a short survey – either online or face-to-face.

The survey opens in late July and runs through to end of September 2025.
All Byron Shire locals are encouraged to get involved.

In November, the community will be invited to a local event to hear the findings and help decide on next steps through the release of the ‘What We Heard’ report.
