Each morning at Fletcher Street Cottage begins with a hot meal, a friendly smile and a sense of welcome. The Breakfast Space offers nourishment, routine and a safe place to connect. It's a vital part of starting the day with dignity and care.
Every morning, Fletcher Street Cottage serves a nutritious breakfast that nourishes both body and soul. Led by chef Steve Strang, who brings his expertise in relational psychotherapy and hospitality, the program fosters a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere that extends beyond just food. Our seasonal menu could rival Byron’s best cafés – from fluffy berry pancakes to perfectly poached eggs and warming organic porridge. But beyond the food, it’s about connection: every client is met with kindness and respect, ensuring that breakfast is not just a meal but a moment of comfort and belonging.
Our Breakfast Space wouldn’t be possible without our dedicated breakfast volunteers who help to cook, serve and clean up each morning. They are the heart of this initiative, serving not just meals but also offering a listening ear and a warm smile to those in need. With empathy and commitment, our volunteers create an atmosphere where everyone feels seen and valued. Their efforts ensure that Fletcher Street Cottage remains a safe and welcoming place, a space where no one has to feel alone, and the garden courtyard becomes a place of community connection.
For many who visit Fletcher Street Cottage, breakfast is more than just food. It’s a source of stability in an otherwise uncertain daily life. A warm meal in a welcoming environment can provide a sense of routine, dignity and hope. By offering not just nourishment but also connection and care, the Breakfast Space plays a vital role in improving overall wellbeing. Many clients return regularly, finding comfort in the friendly faces and supportive community that greet them each morning. Our friendly team and volunteers create a breakfast experience that fosters community connection.
Our Breakfast Space is often the first step in connecting with the broader support available at Fletcher Street Cottage. Community Support Workers are on hand each morning, offering personalised care, a listening ear and referrals to vital services. Through these gentle conversations at breakfast, our team connects clients with specialist services to suit their individual needs, such as mental health care, medical services, legal aid, housing assistance, and more. Breakfast is a gentle, welcoming way to access the support people need, where trust is built and help begins.
In 2024, the Breakfast Space at Fletcher Street Cottage was honoured with the Community Initiative of the Year award at the Byron Shire Community Awards. This recognition highlights the vital role our service plays in supporting people experiencing homelessness - offering not just a meal, but a sense of connection, routine and care at the start of each day. Fletcher Street Cottage provides people experiencing homelessness and hardship with a healthy and delicious breakfast, access to hot showers and laundry, and additional office support.
