Jan Rae Exhibition at Bayleaf Café - Celebrating 130 Years of Community Spirit

Local artist Jan Rae is exhibiting her newest collection, Byron Café Paintings, at the beloved Bayleaf Café. It features colourful Byron Café Society paintings alongside the Byron Hinterland series – a celebration of our beautiful environment. This vibrant solo exhibition reflects Byron’s café culture, stunning landscapes and community spirit - a perfect setting to enjoy art over your morning coffee.

The exhibition coincides with the 130 Years of Community Spirit celebrations at the Byron Community Centre.

Jan Rae was one of the three artists behind the original Byron Community Centre mural in 1984. Her contribution to Byron's creative legacy continues to inspire today. Read more in “The Women Who Painted Byron’s Heart” by Rick Slater.

"My artwork is an enquiry into the constantly evolving meeting place of earth and water where most of us live and is essential for our sustainability. My paintings represent the geography of imagination - celebrating the joy of living and touching dreams of hope. The smaller oil paintings are about mapping a remembered and imagined coastline where the margin between earth and water is lost and refound. They also refer to a lifetime of experiencing the sublime beauty and tidal fluctuations of my home environment. The larger works were created 'en plein air' in the Byron hills and encompass the hinterland and ocean. They are an ode to the joy of living in this beautiful environment. The cafe paintings celebrate our vibrant and eclectic community here in Byron Bay. I have been painting and living here for many years. Byron is my home." - Jan Rae 2025
