Job description

The Byron Community Centre is the hub for many community programs in Byron Bay, home of the Byron Theatre and base for the management of the Byron Markets. 

As a Byron Theatre Front of House staff member you will be required to work as an usher in the box office. You will be responsible for preparation of the venue for all events, as well as the operation of ticketing and customer service enquiries. You will represent the venue at all times: meet, greet, inform and guide patrons to ensure their welfare and enjoyment at all events.

Major Position Functions

  • To assist in the smooth, safe facilitation of events, representing Byron Community Centre in a cheerful, professional manner.
  • To provide the face for the Byron Theatre by welcoming and engaging with patrons. 
  • Front of House is a Workplace Health and Safety role. You will be responsible for safety, including fire safety, risk management and evacuation in an emergency. 

Responsibilities

Key Roles

  • Follow organisational policies & procedures at all times. 
  • Provide excellent customer service;
    • At all times, ensure that interactions with patrons of the theatre, including performers and their crew, are courteous, professional and enthusiastic
    • Greet patrons, check/scan tickets & direct patrons to their seats 
    • Assist safe patron movement throughout the event
    • Assist latecomers in an efficient manner
    • Keep aisles and walkways clear to comply with risk management and ensure patron safety
    • Maintain a sense of integrity toward the theatre and Byron Community Centre
  • Be a team player;
    • Assist with venue set up/pack down including lifting & moving tables and chairs
    • Ensuring venue is clean and tidy - before, during and after events
    • Tidy and reset theatre after events including collecting glasses & clearing rubbish
    • Set up / pack down the box office
    • To be punctual, well presented and adhere to dress code requirements
    • Take direction from your team leader 
    • Assist the Duty Officer and bar as required
    • Treat your team members with respect and courtesy
  • General Front of House duties include;
    • Be able to assist patrons in an emergency situation
    • Operate stair climber for wheelchair access as required
    • Selling merchandise as required

Job requirements

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Must have a good level of fitness and physical ability, and be able to move with agility and urgency throughout all parts of the venue. 
  • Must be willing and able to move and lift furniture and other items required in venue set up (up to 16 KG in weight)
  • Ability to complete multiple tasks simultaneously and efficiently
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and use initiative independently
  • Ability to identify and solve problems and deal with conflict fairly
  • Ability to adapt to change, and to undertake roles outside their normal position description
  • An understanding and ethos of working within a not-for-profit organisation
  • Commitment to the Byron Bay community

Desirable Criteria

  • Current NSW Responsible Service of Alcohol qualification 
  • Current first aid certificate
  • Experience working in an event or hospitality venue 
  • Demonstrated event experience and management skills
  • Current Working With Children Check
